A PET GOES TO PERU

A recent medical mission trip from Davis islands Baptist Church in Tampa, Florida sponsored by Missionary Ventures International carried a PET to Peru and sent this report. "Taking the PET with the team was quite a challenge as it weighed 140 lbs. and the box was quite large. Once in Peru it had to be unpacked and taken apart to fit in the little plane that carried the team to the jungle. It then traveled with the team by canoe to the village where they held clinic. It was presented by his pastor in a very nice church service to a man whose legs were paralyzed. The man, who had fallen away from the Lord was drawn back by the love of Jesus shared by the team and rode his PET every day to attend the pastor/leadership conference being held that week in his village."

GOOD NEWS FROM PET ZAMBIA.

Before Larry and Laura Hills left the Congo to retire in 1999 they built a PET workshop there and Delbert and Sandy Groves, United Methodist missionaries took charge of it. The Groves were later forced by war to flee south of their border to Zambia. There they have set up a large new ministry and a part of it is a PET workshop. We recently received an email from the Groves and the photo displayed above right showing the first PET to be produced in their shop. They have since sent pictures and stories of a subsequent PET distribution service. PET Missouri sends them the metal parts and wheels which are not available in Zambia and they build the wooden parts. They dream of the day when they can once again supply the Congo workshop with metal parts and wheels so PET Congo can resume serving the thousands in need of mobility there.

VOLUNTEERS AT PET FLORIDA ARE HARD AT WORK

Today, the 25th of September,  2002, we packed PET number 236. That is how many we have packed since PET construction started here 16 months ago. We also have 20 more in the curing line ready to pack. Volunteer packers John Muilen burg and Melvin Richey are pictured.

PET MISSOUR HOST A PET CELEBRATION DINNER

Saturday the 23rd of September was described as a mountain top experience by many of the 80 plus PET volunteers from across the U.S. who gathered at the PET Place in Columbia, Missouri. They were there to learn, share, brainstorm, and plan while celebrating what God is doing through PET. Speakers were Mark Richard of the mobility organization Hope Haven who receive and distribute many of our PET's with their wheelchair shipments to over 75 countries, Larry Hills of PET Florida, and Mel West, director of PET Missouri. Earl Miner who designed the original PET was there to demonstrate his newest design effort, the PUSH PET, which, among many uses, can be used as a stretcher bearer in crowded areas without roads such as refugee camps. The brainstorming sessions where small groups of those present gathered to consider several of the problems facing PET now or in the near future in organization, distribution, design changes, etc. produced much material to be compiled and circulated for futher discussion and action. Many of the PET parts makers had the opportunity to see for the first time how their work fits into the finished product and many of those present were able to meet face to face for the first time. Several of the parts makers who supply PET Florida were there and were pleased to hear first hand from PET Florida director Larry Hills, how valuable their contributions are to our PET production here. A delicious dinner was enjoyed by all.

68 BOXED PET’S TRAVEL TO HOPE HAVEN AND 65 TO MERCY SHIPS

In late June PET Florida loaded 65 PET'S Into a one way U-HAUL truck, hitched a small, donated, Acura car behind for the return trip, and PET volunteers Melvin and Betty Richey climbed aboard for the two and a half day trip north to deliver them to Hope Haven in Rock Valley, Iowa. There they have been combined with Hope Haven's wheelchair shipments primarily to the landinined areas of the world where they are allocated to those people who live in places a wheelchair can't go. At the PET celebration reported in the previous article Mark Richard said this shipment went mostly to Viet Nam.
